“Huuuh.” Hitoshi’s exhale is accompanied by a long trail of smoke. Eyes wide in wonder, he listens as Alba Evovae finishes up the report. It was the latest in a long line of top-secret files pulled to help bring him up to speed on what Team Rocket knows about Hoenn’s many incidents and calamities.[break]
“So they saw the past, the present, and the future? That future sounds rough. Me personally? I think people are dwellin’ on the wrong stuff.” Another exhale. He tries to apply his strange animal logic, hunting for gaps in knowledge – thumbing for answers in the dark.[break]
“They saw a buncha dead legendaries, but they saw a bunch other dead Pokemon, too. Could be everybody dies.” A thought which brings him no joy. None whatsoever. He has people he must carry into tomorrow, beyond the future predicted by the dark triad.[break]
“D’you think you’d be able t’tell the difference between my Ceruledge and jayden cross’s? Prolly not. Most people can’t.”

Steam rises from Alba’s flask to join the smoke. He’s played the role of narrator for Hitoshi enough times that he’s learned to bring something to soothe his throat for after they’re done trawling through whatever the Black Dog wants to read. All things considered, it’s not a bad deal; poring over the past chaos in Hoenn’s history is always interesting.[break][break]

Between this and howard slayte’s inability to work a computer, though, sometimes he feels more like a secretary than a scientist.[break][break]

“No, I probably couldn’t. I can tell my own Pokémon apart, but that’s about it.” The hues of sapphire blurred together, until you were close enough to pick out the subtle differences.[break][break]

“People tend to focus on the bigger pieces, though. If something is powerful enough to slaughter our kings and queens, you can probably guess what happened to the pawns.” One such piece on the board had nearly drowned Sootopolis completely; another had been the shadowy patron of their inscrutable leader.[break][break]

“Congratulations on your promotion, by the way.”

“Think ‘bout it like this.” His eyes scan the report. Now that Alba’s read it, his own mind, picking up on the intricacies of the language, can fill in the blanks and reread. “If it’s just the legendaries, that means all the avatars die. If it’s everybody, kinda…” How should he put this?[break]
“…feels like it’s easier t’prove that’un wrong.” A finger taps to another report, before he idly adds a few words. “Thanks. Wasn’t really how I’d want it done, but I’m glad I got there.” Rocket’s weakest beast resolves to not stay this way for long.[break]
“Y’know, Walsh would throw me in some pretty hot water, what fer lettin’ ya read all this stuff.” The epiphany hits him suddenly, like a hammer across the jaw. Inoue Hitoshi likes his jaw, and he likes his heart beating. “I heard ya did a SPECTRA assessment with Cross-Senpai. How’s that goin’?”

“Hmm.” Alba makes a noncommittal sound, his gaze flicking towards the shadows in the corner of the room. The ghost of a smile graces his lips, as if daring declan walsh to step out of the shade.[break][break]

“Well, he’s probably got better things to do than deal with us talking about the end of the world. Seems better to share this kind of thing, anyway; it’s easier to protect yourself from an enemy you understand— but I guess I’m biased.” He takes another sip, as their conversation drifts from eschatology to something more mundane in scope. If an initiative about fending off god-like beings and their chosen could be called ‘mundane’.[break][break]

It was, in Hoenn and Hoenn alone.[break][break]

“I need a sword, he says. Something to sharpen myself.” Something to tear out the throat of the Volatile, though he holds no particular grudge against him as the Admin does.

“Mmm…” Alba needs a sword. That does sound like his blood brother’s spiel. “Alright. I can’t be yer sword, but I can show ya where to find ‘em. Where to train. I can be yer whetstone.” His eyes rise from this talk of calamity and the world ending. Instead, he assesses the man across from him, another soul cast upon this stage.[break]
“SPECTRA’s got behind the scenes folks, but ya still gotta be ready t’fight. What kinda Pokemon d’you like to use? Get a type ya like? Let’s say you had t’fight, uuuuh…” Reaching over for a file, he thumbs through pictures of the League’s various avatars – the ones the public knows about, anyway.[break]
“Shit. Guess this’s out of date, but anyway. He works. What if ya had t’fight Laurence Anderson and Articuno? Articuno ain’t one of the big fish.”

“I don’t know, I think I could swing you around if I tried really hard.” Of course Hitoshi couldn’t be his sword. It was the other way round, if anything, the hierarchy of their organisation placing the Black Dog on top. Even if he was the ‘weakest Beast’, he was a more decorated champion than Alba was.[break][break]

“Ghost-types, Psychic-types, Fairy-types… I guess those are my favourite ones. Most of the Pokémon I use for Rocket are Ghosts, though I’m not really a specialised expert the way a Gym Leader might be.” As for Articuno:[break][break]

“To me, it seems best to focus on weaknesses, even if it’s not the strongest of the strongest; even if its not crippling, at least there’s some leverage to even out the playing field. I doubt its ice will just melt away under ordinary fire, but maybe it’ll weaken with enough effort.”[break][break]

“Of course, it is a bird. Clip its wings, and it’ll crash back down to earth.”

Well…” His mind turns to the royals made of stone and ice. “Most of ‘em, anyway.” There’s a ruthless pragmatism to Alba’s way of thinking. A flightless bird will soon be a dead bird. Mint’s Articuno, suspended with psychic might, is the exception. Luckily, that creature has found common cause with Rocket.[break]
“See? You’d be good in SPECTRA. Got yerself a good head on yer shoulders. Ya got the right mindset. Discretion’s the better part of valor sometimes, and ya know what kinda Pokemon yer good with.” Praise followed by a thorough series of nods.[break]
“So, lemme putcha in fer a combat sim. Wonder if we’ve got an Articuno one…” Turning towards a computer, he begins a search riddled with spelling errors.
